How can I correct errors or omissions in my personal information held by an organization?

The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) requires an organization to correct errors or omissions in your own personal information under its control when you ask it to do so.

Written request
Send your written correction request to the organization that has your personal information, to the organization’s Privacy Officer. Explain the correction you are requesting and include any supporting documentation. The organization must respond to you within 30 working days of receiving your written request.

Form to use for your requests
Click here for a form to help you ask an organization to correct an error or omission in your personal information held by the organization.

What the organization must do
If the organization is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for making the correction, it has to make the correction as soon as possible. The organization must also send the corrected information to each organization to which your corrected personal information was disclosed within the year before the correction was made. Those other organizations must also correct the personal information in their control. If the organization you sent your request to does not make the correction you asked for, it has to make a note that the request was made and attach it to the personal information that was not corrected.

If you are not satisfied with how the organization responded to your request
You can ask us to review the organization’s decision within 30 working days of receiving a response from the organization. Click here for more details.
